PAGE ---- A genealogy of the PAGE family of County Cambridgeshire, England, from c.1630 to about 1850 and concentrating on my direct line. Note: This Page line ends with Sarah Page who married Robert Starling in 1812. There is another Page line, ending with Mary Page who married William Oake in 1704. William and Mary's daughter, Anne, married John Turner and their daughter, Ann, married John Starling, parents of the Robert Starling above. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 16/4/2007 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. Page's are fairly common in Cambridgeshire. Prior to 1700, the surname was mainly concentrated in a few areas in southern Cambridgeshire. 14 miles due west of Cambridge there was Croxton (1540+), Hardwick (1575+), 6 miles due west, Willingham by St Ives (1560+), 8 miles to the north-west and the villages of Shepworth and Melbourn (1569+), which lie about 9 miles south-west of Cambridge. Virtually all Page's in the south-west of Cambridgeshire can be traced to one of these source points, as too Pages that appear in Cambridge itself during the mid to late 1600's. In addition to this south-west region there are two other areas in which Page's are common before 1700. They occur in the Soham area (1549+), some 12 miles to the north-west of Cambridge, north of Newmarket, which lies in the enclave of Suffolk. There is some spread to neighbouring villages, but these Page's do not last past the mid 1600's. The other area of Page's stretches in an arc along the south-eastern border of Cambridgeshire, from Cheveley in the north to Linton in the south. Early instances of Page's in this arc, from north to south, include: Cheveley (1560), Westley Waterless (1576), Balsham (1570) and Linton (1561). Because of their locations, the Balsham and Linton Page's are likely connected, as too as the former two areas. By 1700 Page's could be found in most villages between Linton and Cheveley. In the case of Linton, Balsham and Cheveley, there is only a single family in the earliest records, while for Westley Waterless there appear to have been three siblings. Unfortunately it has not been possible to connect my line to any of these main sources of Cambridgeshire Page's. If there is a connection then it is most likely to the Linton Page's. The earliest Page's in my line come from the area of Shudy Camps and Castle Camps, which lie near the end of a "peninsula" of Cambridgeshire which protudes at the point where the neighbouring counties of Suffolk and Essex join. In fact the two villages are closer to villages in those two counties than they are to other villages in Cambridgeshire, so it is possible that my Page's are not connected with the Cambridgeshire Page's but crossed over the border from either Suffolk or Essex. Weston Colville lies about midway on the main road between Linton and Newmarket. Linton itself is on the Cambridgeshire/Essex border and Balsham, also on the same road, lies about 4 miles north of Linton. Dullingham, on the same road, lies about 4 miles south of Newmarket. Dullingham does not appear to have boasted a native population of Page's, however it seems to have been a rather popular marriage location. Horseheath, bartlow, Castle Camps and Shudy Camps all lie in the far south-east of the county, surrounded on three sides by the counties of Essex and Suffolk. The Page's of my line seemed to have a tendency to produce far more girls than boys - in fact most generations have only one male child. This unfortunately precludes the construction of an extended chart of Page's. 11. Robert Page, born about 1630, possibly at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. (See footnote [1]). Died 1666,[9] and buried 26/7/1666,[9] possibly at Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. Married Dinah Tredget, 17/7/1654, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.[4,9] Dinah Tredget was baptised 22/4/1633,[3] Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.[9] Children of Robert Page and Dinah Tredget: * i. John Page,[9] baptised 7/3/1654, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.[5] ii. Ann Page,[9] born c.1660, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. Married Joseph Bird, 13/4/1680, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire.[6] iii. Sarah Page, born c.1665, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. Married Richard Hoy, 30/1/1686, Bartlow, Cambridgeshire.[7] iv. Thomas Page, born c.1655, Shudy Camps, Cambridgeshire. Married Mary.[8] children of Thomas & Mary Page: (a) William Page, baptised 1/1/1677, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] Died before 1682. (b) William Page, baptised 6/8/1682, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] (c) Mary Page, baptised 2/11/1684, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] Died before 1690. (d) Thomas Page, baptised 23/8/1685, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] (e) John Page, baptised 8/2/1687, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] Died before 1694. (f) Mary Page, baptised 5/10/1690, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] Died before 1698. (g) John Page, baptised 25/8/1694, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] (h) Mary Page, baptised 26/6/1698, Balsham, Cambridgeshire.[8] [1] Robert is possibly the son of Thomas Page and Amye Bacon who married at nearby Castle Camps, 28/7/1614.[2] However Robert would have most likely have been born around 15 years after this marriage and there are no other Page's in the IGI for Shudy Camps or Castle Camps prior to Robert's marriage and no other in the area which can be attributed to any children of Thomas and Amye. Castle Camps is less than a mile from the Suffolk and Essex borders so it is possible that the other children of Thomas and Amye travelled there.
