WALKER ------ A genealogy of the WALKER family of County Down, Ireland, and Australia, from c.1790 to 1884 and concentrating on my direct line. I make no claim regarding the accuracy of this chart; the original sources are not free from error and a degree of guesswork is involved in genealogy. Last revision: 15/1/2002 (c) David Powell, http://roots-boots.net/ft/names.html Reference numbers are denoted by [..]'s and are listed at the end of each section (seperated by a line of *'s). Numbering begins anew with each section. The Walker family appear to be yet another transported Scottish family. Walker is a common Scottish name and many Walker families moved to Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries. It's possible that this Walker line is descended from two brothers, John and Alexander, who settled in County Down between 1702 and 1710. John latter moved on to the USA but Alexander remained behind.[1] Blaris is in the north of County Down, near the town of Lisburn about 8 miles south-west of Dublin. Down, Ireland.[2] Married Agnes Jane.[1,2] Children of Samuel and Agnes Jane Walker: * i. Sarah Walker, born 1821, Blaris, County Down, Ireland.[1,2] [1] Death Certificate, Sarah Neeves nee Walker, NSW.1884.7868 [2] Passenger records for "James Moran", 1841, from Joyce Tomasi. ************************************************* 5. Sarah Mary[30] Walker, born c.1820,(1819[27]/1821[1]) Blaris, County Down, Ireland.[1,29] Sarah was a bounty emigrant, brought out by Robert Howe & Co. for a bounty of 19 pounds, arriving in Sydney, 6/10/1841, upon the "James Moran".[1] According to her passenger record, she was episcopalian (likely Church of Ireland) and a housemaid/dairymaid by occupation.[1] Upon arrival she went into service to John Brown and wife (agents).[1] Sarah died 21/10/1884, Prospect, NSW, aged 65.[2,3,27] Cause of death was "paralysis, asthenia", of 3 months duration.[27] Buried 23/10/1884, St Bartholomew's, C/E Prospect, by Rev. J. Spooner.[2,27] Married Henry Neeves,[23] 8/4/1844, at St Bartholemew's, Prospect,[2,4,22,26-28] Rev. John Troughton offiating.[2] Henry was baptised 11/7/1824, Brede, Sussex,[5,6], emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1841 on the Fairlie,[7] and died 7/1/1877, Prospect, NSW, Australia.[2,8,28] After their marriage at Prospect,[3,7,22,26-28] Henry and Sarah moved to Mulgoa,[10,14] and then to Prospect for several years,[3,15,16,23]. In 1852 Henry decided to try his hand on the gold fields at Turon, NSW,[26] where son James was born.[26] The following year they were back at Prospect where the family remained.[26] According to family tradition Henry operated a small vineyard on his property and produced his own wine but became overfond of the drink and gained a reputation of a drunkard.[31] Family tradition further states that upon the death of her father, back in Ireland, Sarah received, as her inheritance, a share in a brewery (or possibly distillery) but given her husband's frequent bouts of drunkedness, she tore up the deed.[31] Evidence for at least some of this family lore has been found in a newspaper report of a court case involving Henry and Sarah (named as Mary) in which it was claimed that Henry was frequently drunk and often beat Sarah up including attacking her one time with a horsewhip and also threatened to kill her numerous times.[30] After the attack with the horsewhip, which followed a 2-3 day drinking bout, Sarah moved in with her daughter (un-named, but probably Agnes Manning as the other daughter had moved out of the area).[30] At the time of the court case Henry and Sarah had been married for 33 years, however it was stated that they had lived together for only 17 years and a previous 5 year seperation was mentioned (presumably there were others, indicating that Henry's violent drunkedness was not a recent thing).[30] The report also notes that Henry was a farmer and wood cutter, had a vineyard and often employed up to 5 men to work on his farm.[30] By the time of the court case (1876), Sarah was described as being in a "delicate state of health, requiring medical treatment".[30] Henry was found guilty and ordered to pay 15 shillings a week as maintenance, plus court costs and a bond of £20 (pounds) - a considerable sum in those days indicating Henry must have been fairly well off.[30] Whilst there is no evidence for the family story of the brewery inheritance, the remainder of what family tradition says about Henry has now been substantiated. Henry died less that a year after the attack - no doubt his drinking bounts had finally caught up with him. Sarah and Henry are both buried at St Bartholomew's, Prospect.[3] Sarah and William are both buried at St Bartholomew's, Prospect.[3] Children of Sarah Walker and Henry Neeves:[13] i.
