MONTACUTE/MONTAGU ----------------- A genealogy of the MONTACUTE and MONTAGU families of Normandy, France, County Somerset, England, and beyond, from c.1040 to the present day. The de Montacute family of Somerset & Salisbury, c.1040-c.1500, with non-Montacute descendents to the present day. Appendix 1. The Montagu's of Boughton, Northamptonshire and their descendents, c.1440 to the present day. This family includes the Earls of Sandwich and the Duke Montagu's of Manchester. These Montgu's claim descent from the Montacute's, however the name was assumed (the line traces back to Richard Ladd who took the name "Montagu") and the actual connection uncertain. Appendix 2. The Montague's of Boveney, Buckinghamshire and their descendents, c.1460-c.1900. The origins of this family are unknown, however it has been claimed, without any real evidence, that they are descended from the Montacute's. The family first appears in the early 1500's. It does not appear in the 1466 Visitations. Appendix 3. Montacutes/Montague's of Devon, c.1360-c.1500. Robert Montacute, born about 1385, s/o John & Margaret Montacute, married Mary of Devon. Their descendent, Johanna (1518) of Devon, married John Mullins. Their son, William, emigrated to the USA. Appendix 4. Montacute's of Boughton, Northhamptonshire, about 1340 to about 1450. The validity of this short tree is uncertain, as too it's placement in Boughton. This family has been suggested as the ancestors of the Montague's of Boughton, Northhamptonshire (see appendix 1) and the Boughton connection may merely be assumed. The Montacute/Montagu family has had a very important role in English history, from the time of the 1066 invasion on. Admirals, generals, financiers, barons, dukes, archbishops, ambassadors and more. It was a Montagu who founded the Bank of England. It was a Montagu who supported Frances Bacon, founder of modern science. A Montagu created the tradition of "Thanksgiving". A Montacute helped found the first English navy and was its first admiral. Montagu's were instrumental in the ending of Cromwell's "Commonwealth" and the restoration of the King. Montague's were also leader's of Cromwell's armies. A Montagu descendent came within one vote of being elected pope. Another Montagu was the patron of Isaac Newton. A Montagu residence became the first British Musem. Several Montagu's were governors of the British colonies in the America's prior to the revolution. Montagu's were leaders on both sides of that war. A Montagu outfitted and dispatched Captain Cook on his voyages of explotation. The same Montagu invented the sandwich. Montagu's were important in the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. A Montagu was a leading figure in the early fight to have the death penalty abolished in England. Most English Monarch's in the past 600 years have been descendents of Montagu's. The extend of the Montacute/Montagu's contributions to English history goes much further than this brief summary. Dates: Dates using the old calendar in which the year started mid march are sometimes ----- recorded below as 1601-1602, although for space concerns they are sometimes recorded just as 1602. Any date prior to 1752 which has only a single year noted for a date between 1st january and 24th march, for example, 23/2/1645, should be read as 23/2/1644|1645. Where I have not included the split year, I have always gone with the 2nd year. It should be noted that not all secondary sources have consistently presented split year dates, some using the former and others using the latter of the two years. Exact dates, where known, are generally given as dd/mm/yyyy. If only the year is given, it is likely an estimate, tho' possibly accurate to within a year (eg: the date is taken from a will, the year a heir assumed the title, etc). Dates marked with a "c." or "abt." are estimates and should be taken with some care - some are based on some evidence (eg: "known to have died in the late 1470's" would be c.1478), other's are little more than educated guesswork, assuming 20-30 years between generations for the eldest child. A chain of such estimates leads back to Drogo - that his son and heir, William, was born after the 1066 invasion and that Drogo was probably a young man at the time of the invasion are consistent with the estimate for their births calculated backwards using the above guideline - thus the estimates are likely correct to within 5 years in most cases. Estimates as given in some secondary sources have varied wildly. Where there has been a wide range of estimates or estimates that are plainly inconsistent with the individual's placement within the tree & known events I have either come up with my own estimate or omited the estimated date if I have felt there is insufficient evidence to make my own estimate. I have refrained from the common practice of adding 2 years for each additional child. The Montacute's of Somerset, Salisbury etc are believed to have been extinct by 1600, if not earlier - extinct that in no titled line had survived until 1600 at the latest. The most recent male Montacute of known descent from the Montacute's of Somerset, Salisbury etc that I am aware of was born 1490 and had only daughters. Richard however did not marry and died without issue according to his probate.[62] Peter Montagu of Boveney was the first confirmed member of this Montagu family that bore a coat of arms.[62] The 1634 visitation of Buckinghamshire determined, amongst other things, whether claims to arms were legitimate or merely assumed. In the latter case a fine was levied as there was no evidence that the Boveney Montagu's had ever been granted a coat of arms.[62] After payment of the fine, their use of the coat of arms was then sanctioned,[62] as was the normal practice. The Boveney Montague arms are "Ar. three fusils in fesse gu. between as many pelletts".[62] According to the visitation, the family had been using the arms since the mid 16th century.[62] (This would probably tie in to Robert, born 1505). Robert Montacute, born abhout 1385, s/o John & Margaret Montacute, married Mary of Devon (sic). Their descendent, Johanna (1518) of Devon, married John Mullins. Their son, William, emigrated to the USA. This Montacute line is poorly documented and is of some uncertainity. Several suggestions have been made as to where this family may fit into the Montacute tree, however wills and other documentation has ruled out all such suggested links that I am aware of. Given the early origin of this family, I suspect they may well be connected to the Montacute's, probably via a younger son who has not been documented past his birth. John has been suggested as the son of William Montacute & Elizabeth Mohun according to [1], however according to [68] William had only one son, William Jr., who pre-deceased his his father. Upon the death of William Sr in 1397, his title passed to his nephew John, indicating that William (d.1397) had only the one son. [67] suggests John was the husband of Maud Francis, however his children are well established and do not include a Robert. The evidence for the parents of Robert being John & Margaret is also uncertain and this link must therefore be taken with a degree of skepticism. This claim ultimately comes from the 1620 Devon Visitations,[81,86] some 250 years or so after Robert was most likely born. Such sources generally give a dob for Alivia in the early to mid 1100's. However, de Bassett genealogies invariably list Alivia as being born c.1186, much too young to have married Drue Sr. Alivia also remarried after her first husband died and had several children in the 1210's. There is no evidence of an earlier Alivia marrying a Montacute. The obvious conclusion is that the claim that Alivia married Drue has confused Drue with his younger son, also named Drue, and that it is this son who married Alivia. Drue Jr was likely older than Alivia by 10-15 years, but that was not uncommon in those times: women often married in their mid-teens and men (of station) in their late 20's or even older if they first had to establish a name for themselves.
