John Tayler of Alveston

This family appears in Tiddington, parish of Alveston, in the mid 1500s. By 1600 the family had left Alveston parish, at least some to nearby Stratford-on-Avon. The village of Tiddington is midway between that of Alveston & the town of Stratford-on-Avon. Taylor's reappear in Alveston in the 1700s, but it is unlikely there is any connection between the two families given the elapsed time & the absence of any record in the intervening 200 years.

  In 1572 John sold a tavern in Stratford-on-Avon to Thomas Atford: Dated 30/9/1572, "Deed of sale by John Tailer, of Tidington in Alveston, yeoman, to Thomas Atford, of Stratford upon Avon, shoemaker, for £13, of a tenement 'with a taverne to the same belonging' in Stratford in 'Myddelrowe' between a tenement of John Lorde on the west and a tenement of the town of Stratford in the occupation of Thomas Knighton on the east and between 'Bridgstrete' on the north and 'Highe strete' on the south, and late in the tenure of Thomas Burbage, deceased. Witnesses to delivery of seisin on the same date: Walter Roche, William Brace, Richard Brace, Thomas Godwyn, Francis Burnell, and John Bradshaw."[100]  

Dated 30/9/1572, "Feoffment from John Tailer to Thomas Atford of the tenement etc. as above, with power of attorney to Philip Grene to deliver seisin. Witnesses as above."[100]

Dated 1572, "A bond of obligation in twenty-six pounds by John Tailer of Tidington in the parish of Alveston, yeoman, to Thomas Atford of Stratford, shoemaker, 14 Eliz."[100]

 Alveston is a parish in Warwickshire, England, to the east of Stratford-Upon-Avon. Its present boundaries seem to be approximately those given in a Saxon charter of 985. The suffix of “ton” in the names Alveston and Tiddington means a farmstead or settlement of Saxon origin. Alveston is believed to be named after Aenulf, a Saxon chief. The site of the Old Church also indicates that the original Saxon settlement was along Mill Lane leading to a ford across the river. Little is known of the early history of the village, except the granting of a Charter in 955 AD, although it is clearly an earlier settlement than the later and larger development of Stratford-upon-Avon. The origins of the name Tiddington are less clear. Possibly named after Tidda or Tilda. The earliest spelling was “Tidinctune” in 969. The parish includes the two separate villages of Alveston and Tiddington and part of the hamlet of Bridgetown. The Avon is crossed by a ferry at Alveston village and a ford near the mill, the 'Doddanford' of 985. Lower down the stream opposite Cliffe Cottage is the probable site of Welcombe Ford. There was an Iron Age settlement in Tiddington as shown by crop marks near the river. Tiddington has yielded abundant evidence both of Roman and Saxon occupation. A Roman industrial settlement yielded remains including a tile kiln, furnaces and coins indicating a prolonged occupation, which may even have survived the withdrawal of the legions. A Saxon cemetery, dating to the 8th and 9th centuries, was discovered in 1935. The Manor House, just east of Clopton Bridge, is mostly a timber-framed two story building, parts of which date to c.1500 or earlier. The Old Rectory, south-east of the church, with walls almost completely of close-set studding, dates to the early 1500s. The brick facing is somewhat more recent. Alveston Lodge, next to the rectory, is traditionally said to have been the residence of William More, Prior of Worcester, 1518–1535. In the Domesday Book Alveston parish was occupied by 43 families, about 200 people, larger than Stratford-upon-Avon at the time. The village lies chiefly east of the churches, and few of the houses are old. One noticeable house fairly near the ferry is of 17th-century timber-framing in two stories above a high stone basement. The mill at Alveston is mentioned as early as 966. Domesday records three mills here, worth 40s. In 1240 there were two corn mills in Alveston and a corn mill and fulling mill in Tiddington. Two watermills and a fishery were included with the site of the manor in 1570. In 1650 there were three water mills and a fulling mill near the manor-house. Alveston throughout its history has been essentially a freeholders' village. In 1240 the free tenements comprised more than one-third of the manor. The demesne in 1240 consisted of 4 carucates of land 'with the new addition'. By 1699 the heath was being ploughed and fenced in for corn, and a part of the Black Ground Field was hitched for feeding horses. A part of the heath was ordered to be laid down with grass seeds in 1704, and within the next 30 years these new crops, among which clover is first specifically mentioned in 1719, were introduced into four of the common fields, being generally sown together with oats or barley. The cultivation of turnips for sheep feed began on the heath in 1729. A petition for inclosure was approved by the House of Commons in 1771. The inclosure established 6 large farms ranging from 142 to 407 acres, and 5 others of between 50 and 100 acres. Smaller allotments were made to 9 other proprietors. The largest holdings were those of Newsham Peers, Lord Lifford (300 acres, now Alveston Pasture Farm), and Thomas Hiron (now Alveston Hill Farm, 275 acres). The great majority of the individual proprietors came of families which had been settled in the parish since before 1600. Tiddington, although from earliest times a separate township from Alveston, has never been a separate manor. Although the first major battle of the English civil war was fought at Edgehill, only 14 miles away, Alveston, largely escaped the full force of war with only minor threats, thefts and skirmishes. In 1744 Alveston was lauded as a health spa. On Alveston Hill there was a spring and a pool where the sick bathed in hope of a cure.

"Alveston, a village and a parish in Warwickshire. The village stands near the Avon, under Welcombe Hills, amid charming environs, 2 1/2 miles ENE of Stratford-on-Avon. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Stratford-on-Avon. The parish contains also the hamlets of Tiddington and Bridgetown. Acreage, 2886; population, 954. There are several gentlemen's residences in the village. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Worcester; value, £190. Patron, the rector of Hampton Lucy. The church formerly belonged to the abbey of Tewkesbury, and is an ancient stone edifice with transepts and a pinnacled western tower. It was restored in 1876, at a cost of £4000."[1895 Comprehensive Gazetteer of England and Wales]
The parish church is dedicated to St James. In 1837 it was resolved to build a new Church and on the 1/8/1837 the foundation stone of the present St James’ was laid by Mrs Fortescue-Knottesford of Alveston Manor. The completed building was consecrated on 16/5/1839 by the Bishop of Worcester. The present church of St James consists of a chancel with north and south chapels, a broad nave, south porch, and west tower. There are four bells, one modern, the others are dated 1658, 1616 inscribed 'god save noble king James and Thomas Townsend' and 1729. The architect for the new church, William Walker, reputedly designed the church based on Westminster Abbey. It has an imposing structure with a high roof space and impressive hammer beams and is considerably larger than its predecessor. The new building had seating for 570 people, 316 of which were declared to be “free and unappropriated for ever” (ie not assigned to a particular family). The construction costs were small, even for the time, just £2,640, much of the materials having been recycled from the old church. By 1871 the population of the Parish of Alveston had risen to almost 1,000. St James was considered too small and the east end of the church was enlarged in 1875. The tower was restored in 1945. The walls of the Lady Chapel are lined with seventeenth century panelling. The remains of the old parish church stand about 1/4 mile north and consist of the almost derelict chancel, built of 18th-century red brick with rusticated angle dressings, and covered with rough-cast cement; the roof is tiled. The east window is unglazed. In the south wall was a doorway, now blocked to form an external recess. In this is reset the elaborately carved tympanum of a 12th-century doorway, and two carved capitals. There are eight funeral monuments inside, the oldest and most interesting of which is that of Nicholas Lane, who died 1595. There is no mention of a priest at Alveston in the Domesday Survey. In 1240 the church was a chapelry of Hampton Lucy, remaining such until 1858. Although the old church fell into disuse it was not totally demolished, the chancel was left intact. The Old Church was restored in 1945 and again between 2000-2005. In 2006 it was rededicated by the Bishop and it remains in use as a church today, with a weekly service in Summer.[Alveston Parish History, Parish of Alveston, British History Online]
"The old church, dedicated to St James, which adjoins the park of Alveston House, and in which most of the members of the family of Peers lie buried, is now but a ruin. The chancel, with a bellcote, is all that remains of the original structure, the nave having been pulled down when the present church was built, about a quarter of a mile distant, in 1839. Beyond the monuments and two carvings in stone of the thirteenth century there is nothing of interest in this church, which is now used for funeral services for the members of such families as have vaults in the churchyard.'[Miscellanea genealogica et heraldica, 1906]

 There is no apparent connection between this family and my Taylors of Alveston, although William Sr, below, did have a daughter baptised at Alveston. William & his family appear to have lived at Shottery and/or Welcombe. Shottery is to the south-west of Stratford whilst Welcombe lies on the opposite bank of the River Avon from Alveston. The family were labourers, neither owning or even leasing land.

The following was a middle class family, moving in the same circles as the Townsends & Hiccoxes. Whether there was any relation between the families, they certainly knew each other, as testified by the appearance of the following family with the abovementioned families in numerous deeds & records, along with other families of a similar social standing, such as the Shakespeare's.

Dated 18/3/1527-1528, "Indenture of lease from Thomas Grevile, gent., master of the Gild of the Holy Cross etc., of Stratford with the consent of William Phillipps, Adrian Quyny, Thomas Taylor, Richard Lorde, Olifer Lyghttfoott, William Staffordsher, Hugh Raynoldes, and Thomas Whateley, aldermen, and William Smyth alias Fynche and Richard Vnderhill, proctors of the said Gild, to Richard Smyth 'deister', of a tenement with a small garden adjoining and a small close late in the tenure of Adrian Quyny in 'Le Churche' [sic] between a small close belonging to the warden of the Collegiate Church of Straford on one side and Evysham lane "in lee West" on the other side and extending in length from the said street as far as the land or garden of the said Warden of the said Collegiate Church "in lee So the", for 51 years at the annual rent of 15 shillings with usual covenants and bond of obligation in £5 for the performance thereof. Dated in the hall of the Gild, 18 March, 19 Henry VIII."[116]

Dated 1/12/1536, "Counterpart of lease, indented, from Thomas Phyllyppes, master of the Gild of the Holy Cross etc., of Stratford upon Aven, with the assent of John Combes, William Phyllyppes, Thomas Taylor, Richard Lord, Hugh Ranoldes, Oliuer Lyghtfoot, Henry Samwell, and Thomas Whatley, aldermen, and Thomas Bager and William Hans, proctors of the same Gild, to Richard Symons, of a barn and garden in Swynestret then in the tenure of the said Richard Symons, for 90 years at an annual rent of 4 shillings and chief rent Dated in the Gildhall, 1 December, 28 Henry VIII. Endorsed in a later hand: 'In the tenure of Mr Adrian Quiney'."[117]

In 1537 was leasing property from Gild of the Holy Cross on High Street and 'Ely Strett, Rodur Strett and Grenhyll'.[118]

Dated 1/11/1540, "Indenture of lease, from William Smythe, master of the Gild of the Trinity, our Lady the Virgin and the Nativity of St. John Baptist, of Stratford vppon Avin, with the assent of William Clopton of Clopton, esq., Thomas Taylor, Richard Lord, Hughe Ranoldes, Henry Samwell, Richard Lyghtfott, Henry Hyll, Richard Quyny, aldermen and William Benett and Richard Marchawld, proctors of the same Gild, to Thomas Badjar of Bydford Graunge, mercer, of two tenements in Stratford in the Churche Strett, then in the tenure of Thomas Gylbard, 'daystar', for 70 years at an annual rent of 20 shillings. 'Dated made and sealyd yevin', 1 November, 32 Henry VIII."[119]

Dated 15/9/1542, "Counterpart of lease, indented, from Antony Barker, clerk, warden of the 'colligiall' church of Stratford vppon Avyn, to Thomas Taylor, 'carpinter', of a tenement in Brigestret, then in the occupation of William Geys, for 41 years at an annual rent of 8 shillings; with bond of obligation in £10 for the performance of covenants. The tag is a fragment of a bond of obligation from William Benet of Stratford, yeoman, to Antony Barker, clerk, warden of the College of Stratford, in the sum of £10."[120]

Dated 24/1/1562, "Thaccomt of John Tayler and John Shakspeyr, chamburlens, made the xxiiij.th day of January in the v.th yere of the reigne of (our) sovereigne lady Elyzabethe by the grace of God of Englond, Fraunce and Irelond Quene, defendor of the Feithe, &c., for one wholl yer endynge at the feest of Sent Mychaell tharchaungell now last past, 1562-3. This account is for the year ending at Michaelmas, 1562, and is of great interest as being the earliest accounts of John Shakespeare as chamberlain known to exist. Amongst the entries are,--"receved of the new barbur for hys fredum, iij.s. iiij.d.--Receved of Amblet for hys chambur, ij.s. vj.d.--Payd to Haghe carpenter for hangyng the gret bell and makyng the whell, xx.d.--Payd for reparacyons of a shop behynd the shombulles, iij.s.--Payd to Hall for settyng a ston at the Chappell door, vj.d." On the reverse are two marks, which may be those of Shakespeare and Taylor."[102]

Dated 16/4/1562, "Lease indented by Humfrey Plymley, 'hyghe balye' of Stratford uppon Avon, Adryan Quyney, 'highe alderman', John Taylor and John Shakspere, 'chamberleyns', to Roger Grene, of Stratford, 'mylner', of a tenement in Stratford in Henley Strete and a garden in Henley Lane, both in the tenure of the said Roger, for 31 years, at a yearly rent of 14 shillings."[101]

Dated 24/1/1562-1563, "Account of John Taylor (John Taylor, the dyer of Sheep Street) and John Shakespeare, made by John Taylor: Thaccomt of John tayler & John Shakspeyr, Chamburlens, made the xxiiljth day of January in the 5th yere of the reigne of [our] Souereigne lady elyzabethe by the grace of god of englond fraunce & Irelond quene defendor of the feithe &c. for one Wholl yer endynge at the feest of Sent mychell tharchaungell now last past. (At the back of the document is Taylor's cross as acting Chamberlain. Two other marks are attached to names unfortunately erased or torn)."[112]

On 15/2/1566, "Alderman John Jeffreys died, as he had lived, in the Old Faith. In his will, dated 27/7/1566, he said, I give my soul to God, to be in joy with our Blessed Lady and with all the Holy Company of Heaven '. William Smith, corviser, and Nicholas Barnhurst were witnesses, and John Taylor, the shearman, and Alderman William Tyler were appointed supervisors. All were neighbours of the testator in Sheep Street."[110]

Recorded 10/1/1567-1568, "Item payd to John Tyler for groundesellynge in the olde Scole, 2s."[110]

Dated 28/11/1571, "Receved by the chamherlens at this Hall of John Tayler master of the occupacion ot Diers and shermen, for the fredome of edmunde Ratlvf Dier the somme of xxxs Dew vnto the chamber accordinge to theire boke &c."[110]

In the 10/3/1573-1574 Rent Roll, Shipstrete Ward & Bancroft side: "John Tayler for a tenement in shipstreet and a barne in bancrofte syde rent by yere, 17s."[110]

On 17/3/1574 John Taylor was recorded as having an expired lease on Sheep Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Co Warwickshire, England.[103]

Dated 5/9/1576, "Acquittance from Henry Heicroft, vicar of Stratford-upon-Avon, to John Taylor and Anthony Tanner, chamberlains, for £10, a half year's rent 'for the serveing of the vicaridg'. Signed, with seal."[104]

Dated 23/1/1576-1577, payment to "John Tayler for tyles & saunde, 2s 6d."[110]

Dated 23/1/1576-1577, "[paid] to John Tayler tor a pece of tymber to make silles for the Vicars howse, 6s 8d."[110]

Recorded 26/1/1580-1581, "Receaued of John Tailer as arrerages of widow lockes rent, 15d ob."[111]

Recorded 31/1/1581-1582, "Receaued for the bell and paule for John Tayler, 8d" & "Receaued of John Tailer for ffrauncis Wheeler for the occupacion of Sharemen, 10s."[111]

Recorded in the Corporation Property Survey, 5-6/11/1582, "Shypstreet. a tenement in tenure of John tayler sufficently repayred save that hys barne lacketh tylinge. growing on hys moundes j bunnell elme a smale elme & a smale ashe."[111]

In 1683, John Taylor and John Hunt, Churchwardens, donated one of the church bells (number 7).[125]

Recorded 3/10/1589, "The Rentes Receaved as followeth for 3 quarters of the yeare. Sheep Street: John Taylor, 12s 9d .. 17s (for the year)."[113]

Dated 16/1/1589-1590, "Rent recieved, John Tayler, 4s 3d."[113]

On 8/1/1590-1591, "At thys halle John Tayler hathe payd to Edward Busshell one of the Chamburlens xxs for the last parte of Thomas Allen his Composition and xxd for the ffreedom of willm Gybson a sharman late prentise wth the seyd John Tayler."[113]

On 15/1/1590-1591, "Received of John Taylor for parte of Aliens fyne, 10s."[113]

Dated 30/6/1592, "Item olde Jhon Tailer (The Senior Burgess, the shearman) paied & delivered to Henrye Wyllson three shillinges fower pence wch was for a forefaiture made vnto ther occupation (Dyers and Shearmen) and wch by order of ther booke is dwe to the chamber : thys forefaiture was made by michaell Shackleton (He died in July 1595)."[113]

On 8/9/1592 made his last appearance as a burgess in the Stratford Corporation, "He left Stratford, with a gift of 10s from the Corporation."[113]

Dated 7/4/1591, a description of the Borough of Stratford-upon-Avon, refers to a barn owned by Thomas, previously owned by John Taylor, "We doe Present the Liberties of this Borough .. thence to the Elme at Thomas Taylor's Barne End And from Thomas Taylor's Barne upp the Bancrofte to the Bridge. And thees are the Lymitts of this Boroughe of Stretford."[113]

Hugh may be connected to the previous Taylor family, both families were of the same social standing, both heavily connected with the Stratford Borough council, providing several aldermans and mayors over the years. The earlier family, above, also has a Hugo who died 1561, so the name is not unknown in that family. There is, however, no trace of Hugh's baptism at Stratford and his family were bakers whilst the family above were in the wool trade. The family below has several financial & other interations with my own lines (notably Hiccox, Townsend & Tyler).

Dated 5/6/1626, "Bond from Grace Armsden, late of Shenington, co. Glouc., widow, Nicholas Tibbatts, tanner, and Hugh Taylor, yeoman, both of Stratford upon Avon, to Thomas Greene and William Shawe 'ediles' of Stratford, Robert Butler, gent., Thomas Quiney, vintner, William Smith and William Greene, yeomen 'procurators' of the poor, in £20, that the said Nicholas and Hugh shall indemnify the townsmen of Stratford for all charges they may incur by reason of the said Grace coming to dwell there."[129]

In 1651, was a witness, along with son Thomas, to "Bargain and sale for the consideration of £400 between John Bromley of Stratford upon Avon, maltster and Elizabeth his wife on the first part and Michael Olney of Stratford upon Avon, gentleman and Thomas Baylis, chapman of Stratford upon Avon on the second part. Of a close of four acres known as Clopton Close in Ols Stratford now or late in the tenure of John Bromley, another close in Old Stratford in the same tenure lying between the lands of the late William Reynolds on the south and the north and extending from the lane by the Avon on the east to the land late of William Morrell on the west part, also barn of 5 bays standing on part of last mentioned close. To hold to the only use of the said Thomas Bayliss of the chief lord of the fee for rights and services. Signed by: John Bromley and Elizabeth Bromley (by mark) and witnessed by William Biddle, John Brooke, Mathew Biggins, Thomas Dighton, Robert Archer, Thomas Taylor and Hugh Taylor."[130]

Property: messuage, barn, orchard and two little closes in Windsor Street or Hell Lane in occupation of Thomas Cleever, yeoman and messuage and garden in Swine Street in occupation of George Taska, mason and two closes called Salmon Tayle and Salmon Jole in occupation of Thomas Taylor, gentleman and Dovehouse Close in occupation of Edward Elderton, gentleman, to hld for 99 years at a peppercorn rent unless Rawlings repays £180 by 15th February 1676/7."[126]

Edmund & James may be brothers - both name sons Peter around the sane time - only three Peter Taylor's appear in Stratford between 1550-1650 and the third was a great-grandson of James. Both James & Edmund had daughters named Anne & Jone born within months of each other. Edmund is of particular interest since one of his daughters married into one of my lines, the Fakener's of Alveston. Edmund appears in a few land records, but there is no burial for either Edmund or his wife not any marriages apart from his eldest child, suggesting he left Stratford, possibly in the late 1590s. I have been unable to find any record of James other than the church register. There was also an Edward Taylor, comtemporary with Edmund. Whilst Edmund & Edward were used somewhat interchangably, the two appear to be distinct individuals - Edmund appeared to have had some money whilst Edward died a pauper and there were baptisms to both Edward & Edmund in the same year, but far enough apart as to have not been twins (Edward appears to have been part of another family group, with possible brothers Henry & Richard [from common forenames], this family group is not included in this chart as it is to fragmentary & of no apparent connection with any of my lines).
